Public Notice: Pertaining to Taking of Striped Bass 1996

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites additional public comment on changes to its regulation "Pertaining to the Taking of Striped Bass."

In accordance with §;28.2-209 of the Code of Virginia, a public hearing on proposed changes will be held at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, November 26, 1996 at the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News. Written comments should be sent to Jack Travelstead, Fisheries Management Division, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, P. O. Box 756, Newport News, VA 23607. The regulation, with changes presented by staff, may be reviewed and copied at the offices of the Commission from Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Proposed changes include modifications of Section 4 VAC-20-251-130, 4 VAC-20-251-150 and 4 VAC 20-251-160 to include alternative commercial striped bass harvest quota allocation methods including, but not limited to the following:

A. Distribution of the commercial striped bass quota to all 1996 striped bass permitted fishermen and to all persons on the 1996 permit waiting list.

B. Elimination of the allocation of commercial quota based upon fishing gear type.

C. Addition of provisions to allow for the transfer, trade, or sale of striped bass quota.

D. Other alternative allocation methods which may result in a reduction in current permit holder's quotas.

All persons interested in commenting on these proposals or in offering other alternatives are encouraged to attend this public hearing.
