Public Notice: Pertaining to Triploid Suminoe Oysters, Crassostrea Ariakensis 2002

Note:  This public hearing was not held on June 18, 2002 as originally scheduled.  The VSC permit request was withdrawn at the VSC's request and will be considered at a later time.

NOTICE

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on a proposal and request for permit by the Virginia Seafood Council to deploy about one million triploid Suminoe oysters (Crassostrea ariakensis) at 39 locations in Virginia waters for aquaculture and subsequent marketing trials. The time span of the proposed project is from June 2002 until the end of May, 2003. A permit is required under Section 28.2-825 of the Code of Virginia for the deployment of this non-native oyster in the water of the Commonwealth.

A public hearing on the issuance of the required permit will be held at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at the Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News, Virginia. Written comments on the proposal should be mailed to: Jack G. Travelstead, VMRC Fisheries Management Division, 2600 Washington Avenue, 3rd Floor, Newport News, Virginia 23607. A full copy of the Virginia Seafood Council proposal entitled, "2002 Industry Trials with Triploid C. ariakensis," may be reviewed at the Commission during Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or may be obtained by calling the Commission office at (757) 247-2248.
