The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on its proposed revised Wetlands Guidelines which may be viewed on the VMRC web calendar at
https://mrc.virginia.gov/calendar.shtm.
Public comments should be provided via email to
wetlandsguidelines@mrc.virginia.gov with the subject heading "Wetlands Guidelines Comments" by Wednesday, March 31, 2021
Friday, April 16, 2021.
The proposed revisions were undertaken in response to legislative mandates required by Senate Bill 776 and the 2020 living shorelines legislation. The purpose of this document is to revise the existing Wetlands Guidelines to provide minimum standards for the protection and conservation of wetlands and to communicate to stakeholders and regulatory authorities that it is the policy of the Commonwealth to support living shorelines as the preferred alternative for shoreline stabilization as directed in 28.2-104.1 of the Code of Virginia. This document will aid citizens and local decision makers in making on-site jurisdictional determinations, explain the risks and benefits provided by various shoreline treatments, and identify preferred shoreline management options.
Following our receipt and consideration of the public comments received, staff will prepare the final draft for the Commissions consideration at an upcoming meeting. We are tentatively planning to present this to the Commission at their May 25, 2021 meeting.
