News Release:  THE VIRGINIA MARINE RESOURCES COMMISSION REVOKES TWO WATERMEN’S LICENSES

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. -- The Virginia Marine Resources Commission took the following actions on fisheries violations at their May 24, 2016 meeting:


Edwin Cooper, of Tangier, Virginia. Mr. Cooper, a commercial licensee, was convicted in Accomack County General District Court on October 14, 2015 on one count of fish potting without a license. Mr. Cooper is currently on probation for two years through August 24, 2017 for taking oysters out of season and taking oysters from a condemned area. As a result, the Commission voted to revoke all Mr. Cooper’s Commission-issued licenses for a period of one year from the date of the Commission meeting, May 24, 2016 to May 23, 2017. The Commission also voted to prohibit the issuance, reissuance, and renewal of any of Mr. Cooper’s licenses during this revocation period, May 24, 2016 to May 23, 2017. Mr. Cooper’s fishing privileges, within the Commonwealth’s tidal waters were also revoked for a period of one year from the date of the Commission meeting, May 24, 2016 to May 24, 2017.

Jamie M. Lowney, of Gloucester, Virginia. Mr. Lowney, a commercial licensee, was convicted in Gloucester General District Court on March 10, 2016 on two counts: one count for having no striped bass tags or permits and one count of failure to have the appropriate hook and line license. The Commission voted to revoke all of Mr. Lowney’s Commission-issued licenses for a period of one and one-half years from the date of the Commission meeting, May 24, 2016 through November 23, 2017. The Commission voted to prohibit the issuance, reissuance, and renewal of any of Mr. Lowney’s licenses during this revocation. Mr. Lowney’s fishing privileges within the Commonwealth’s tidal waters were also revoked for a period of one and one-half years from the date of the Commission meeting, May 24, 2016 through November 23, 2017. Upon completion of the revocation period, the Commission voted to place Mr. Lowney on three years’ probation from November 24, 2017 through November 23, 2020.
